On Wednesday, Ontario Premier Doug Downey visited the facility, where he announced that the provincial government would pay for the construction of a new, larger facility with 30,000 additional beds. The province also committe to upgrading 28,000 existing beds in long-term care facilities across the province.
The community recently lost three residents. One person died at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre on Monday, and two more died at the facility on Sunday. This brings the regional death toll to 23. Several facilities across the region are currently dealing with outbreaks of COVID-19. Owen Hill is the latest. The COVID-19 outbreak has affected seven facilities in the area.
