A new video posted online by Grasshopper Creation shows a brief glimpse of a horror title built using Epic’s Unreal Engine 5. Although no details about the upcoming title were given during the brief clip, some fans are already speculating that the footage may be from the Shadows of the Damned sequel, which was hinted at by director Suda51 in 2021.
Grasshopper Creation is a Japanese video game developer founded in 1998 by Goichi Suda, better known to many gamers by his nickname Suda51, responsible for creating several titles that have become cult classics. Some of Grasshopper’s best-known titles include the stylish and surreal Assassin 7 of 2005 and the irreverent samurai slasher game from the No More Heroes franchise. Locust has also developed several titles with horror influences, such as the demon-filled Shadow of the Damned and the cheerleader-led zombie action game Lollipop Chainsaw.
In a tweet teasing a new interview with Suda51 for Grasshopper Archives, the official account for Grasshopper Manufacturing posted a short clip that shows a developer working hard in the studio’s dev room. As the camera approaches the developer’s desk, they are seen sketching some sort of strange creature on one screen, while pictures of a physical model of the same creature are displayed on another nearby monitor. When asked what they are doing, the developers state that their job is to create 2D sketches of 3D models, although they say they don’t know why they were given the task. Underneath the pictures, it is possible to find a project file tree that indicates that these concept images may be open in Unreal Engine 5, indicating that the engine will be used for Grasshopper’s next title.
Speculation intensified after the release of the clip that the creature featured on the screen could be a rumored sequel to Shadows of the Damned, teased in 2021.
