A Guide on Georgette Fabric: Origin, Types, and Uses

    Origin of Georgette fabric

Georgette is made from a strong and plain weave. It has tear-resistant and lightweight properties. Clothes made from georgette have flowy look, semi-sheer along with a gritty feel. It is a fact that chiffon fabric is the inspiration behind the creation of georgette fabric. However, georgette fabric has more strength and is long-lasting in contrast. Georgette is the creation of the French designer Georgette la de plante who got inspiration from chiffon fabric to create it. She introduced georgette fabric by creating various gowns and dresses with its characteristics of a ‘net finish’. Georgette fabric was made out of silk. The modern manufacturing process uses synthetic and semi-synthetic fibers for its production. India, Italy, and Switzerland are the major producer of this fabric. Georgette is made from silk, rayon, and polyester yarns.

    Production

Georgette has two categories pure and faux. Pure georgette is woven from silk yarns and faux georgette is from polyester and rayon yarns. In modern times, georgette is largely used for synthetic filaments. The fabric is woven into twisted yarns in both warp and weft. It makes this fabric slightly rough to the touch. The fabric’s twist from puckers on the surface gives it rippled look. Georgette is made with crepe weave by cyclic two right-hand ends and two left-hand ends of hard twisted yarns. Georgette can also be made using jacquard or satin weave and produces satin georgette and jacquard georgette. Plain georgette fabric is more used for making your ethnic salwar suits.

    Types of Georgette fabric

    • Crepe georgette fabric is an orthodox type of georgette that is a coarse-grained and sheer fabric.
    • Jacquard georgette fabric is woven with a jacquard loom and is very strong, stable, and long-lasting.
    • Embroidered georgette fabric is embellished with sequins, beadwork, and threads.
    • Satin georgette is constructed with a satin weave.
    • Stretch georgette fabric consists of lycra, spandex, and elastane which is used in lingerie and couture.
    • Double georgette fabric is dense, lightweight, and translucent.
    • Polyester georgette fabric has a wide range of colors and patterns like abstract shapes, geometric shapes, and animal patterns.
    • Silk georgette is a strong, crease-resistant, and all-weather fabric. Silk georgette is highly absorbent, breathable, and hypoallergenic. It is suitable for dresses like skirts or tops and for layering other garments. The most expensive silk georgette is made of 100% silk.

    Uses of georgette fabric

Georgette is used in various items like table decorations, curtains, and pillow covers. When it is made in solid prints and colors, it is used for scarves, blouses, gowns, dresses, bridal wear, and party wear. Georgette fabric is used with different cuts of dresses. It includes flare wrap, A-line, pleated, midi dresses, sheer flowy garments, and maxi dresses. Indian sarees are often made from silk georgette due to their material layers and are well suited around the body. This fabric is also used for bows, veils, and other accessories.

    Importers and exporters

The most famous industry of georgette fabric is based in Switzerland and Italy. India is the largest exporter of silk used for making georgette.

    Environmental effect

Georgette is a biodegradable fabric and its degradation depends upon the material used for it. For example, silk started degrading after four years of use. The manufacturer may want to use synthetic fibers such as polyester and rayon to strategically use the environmental repercussions. Silk has also a negative impact but you will find a classic variety of plain georgette fabrics with silk blends and women like them so much. Silk is not biodegradable when synthetic fibers like polyester and rayon are used. The production of silk hurts the environment but if you look from the appearance perspective, silk blended with georgette creates awesome print georgette fabric which is widely used for celebration wear purposes.

Mulberry trees are also used for getting silkworms. Unfortunately, mulberry is a highly invasive species. They prevent other plants to grow due to extreme water consumption conditions. It leaves less water to sustain and upsets natural ecosystems and native flora.

    Conclusion

Georgette is a popular fabric that is breathable, durable, and stable. You can find different blended forms of georgette in the market with silk, polyester, rayon, and many more. It is a luxurious fabric used for making festival dresses, wedding day dresses, sangeet ceremony dresses, and for lots of your favorite events. Make your day special with georgette dresses!
